Edwin Powell Hubble is an American astronomer. He played a central role in establishing the realms of astronomy outside of galaxies and observable universes. Hubble has shown that many objects previously considered clouds of dust and gas and classified as "nebulae" are in fact galaxies outside the Milky Way. He used the strong direct relationship between brightness and the pulse period of the classical Cepheid variable to extend galactic and extraterrestrial distance. Hubble provided evidence that a galaxy's diving speed increased with its distance from Earth, a property known today as the “Hubble Law”, despite the fact that it was used by Georges Lemaître, proposed and demonstrated by observation two years earlier. The Hubble-Lemaître law implies that the universe is expanding. Ten years ago, American astronomer Vesto Slipher provided the first evidence that the light from many of these nebulae was radically redshifted, showing high rates of degradation.
